US midterms: how votes become official results
After the 3 November 2026 vote, counting, checks and certification follow state-by-state procedures.
Announcement / applicable / guide date:

The 2026 US midterm election took place on 3 November. All 435 House of Representatives seats and roughly one-third of Senate seats come up in the regular congressional election cycle. Midterms do not elect the president.
On 4 November, election-night figures must be distinguished from certified results. For example, New York’s election authority labels its election-night figures unofficial and requires a review of votes before certification. There is no single nationwide certification date.
Officials reconcile voting records and count eligible ballots under state rules, including mail and provisional ballots. A provisional ballot requires an eligibility check before it can be counted. Totals may therefore change after election night. A media projection is not official certification.
The canvass is the review and reconciliation of election returns; certification is the formal approval of the results by the responsible authorities. Timing varies by state. For a particular race, follow the state or local election office and check the update time and whether figures are preliminary or certified.
